BT feat. Vincent Covello - Loving You More (1995)

Brian Wayne Transeau, a.k.a. BT, born in Maryland, US, to Romanian parents, has produced and written for artists such as Paul Van Dyk, Peter Gabriel, 'N Sync, Sting, Blake Lewis, Tori Amos and Tiësto. He is known for using a production technique he calls the stutter edit. This technique consists of taking a small fragments of sound and then repeating it rhythmically.
In 2010, BT was nominated for a Grammy Award for his studio album, These Hopeful Machines under the category Best Electronic/Dance Album.
A couple of days ago he released the audio plug-in 'Stutter Edit' based on his editing digital audio in realtime.
It seems ages ago, that, already back in 1995, that he started capturing my senses by one of his earliest releases. Back then, he hired Vincent Covello to deliver dreamy lyrics on 'Loving You More', another one of my favorite Trance records.

Banderas - This Is Your Life (1991)

Banderas was a female duo of the early 1990s that was signed to London Records and an offshoot of Jimmy Sommerville’s band The Communards. Caroline Buckley teamed up with Sally Herbert, one of his female backing singers. Banderas is mostly remembered for 'This Is Your Life', which was written with songwriter Roger Swallow. You can count them as a one-hit-wonder if you discount their follow up singles, which were largely ignored.
This is your Life reminds me heavily of my years at the Prinz Luitpold Bad, a Bavarian Hotel I worked in, before emigrating to the UK.

Joaquín Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez (1939)

Here is a bit of a treasure: not quite classic, no quite contemporary music, yet one of the most recognisable pieces of formal music of the 20th century and considered one of the pinnacles of Spanish culture. Joaquín Rodrigo, born 22 Nov 1901 (coincidence that it is his 110th birthday today), has been blind since the age of three. He studied music in Paris, where he met Victoria Kamhi, a Turkish-born pianist and whom he married. He composed the beautiful Concierto de Aranjuez in 1939, as a reaction to the miscarriage by his wife. For this, he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Música in 1983, was raised into the Spanish nobility by King Juan Carlos I with the hereditary title of Marquis of the Gardens of Aranjuez, received the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award, Spain's highest civilian honour, in 1996 and was named Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 1998.
Joaquín died 6th July 1999 in Madrid at the age of 97, and was buried next to his wife at the cemetery at Aranjuez.
The adagio of the concierto reached such status that it has often been performed, covered, sampled and - believe it or not - remixed!

J. Birkin & S. Gainsbourg - Je T'aime (1967/69)

'Je T'aime,...Moi Non Plus' is a - if not THE - classic French duet. It was written for and recorded with Serge Gainsbourg's then-girlfriend, Brigitte Bardot, in winter 1967. Brigitte asked him to write the most beautiful love song he could imagine and that night he wrote 'Je t'aime'. They recorded an arrangement by Michel Colombier at a Paris studio in a two-hour session in a small glass booth; the engineer William Flageollet said there was 'heavy petting' involved. But news of the recording reached the press and Brigitte's then-husband (yes, it appeared to be a very liberal interpretation of 'free love' back then), German businessman Gunter Sachs, was angry and called for the single to be withdrawn. Brigitte pleaded with Serge not to release it, and although he protested that 'The music is very pure. For the first time in my life, I write a love song and it's taken badly', he complied.
In 1968, Serge fell in love with English actress Jane Birkin on the set of their film 'Slogan'. After filming, he asked her to record the song with him. Jane had heard Brigitte's version and thought it hot. She said:' only sang it because I didn't want anybody else to sing it', jealous at the thought of his sharing a recording studio with someone else. Serge asked her to sing an octave higher than la B.B. It was recorded in an arrangement by Arthur Greenslade in a studio at Marble Arch. Jane said she 'got a bit carried away with the heavy breathing – so much so, in fact, that I was told to calm down, which meant that at one point I stopped breathing altogether. If you listen to the record now, you can still hear that little gap'.
There was media speculation, as with the Brigitte Bardot version, that they had recorded live sex, to which Serge told Jane: 'Thank goodness it wasn't, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record'. The track was released in February 1969. The single had a plain cover, with the words 'Interdit aux moins de 21 ans' (forbidden to those under 21) - perhaps a predecessor of the modern-day 'Adult Guidance'. Brigitte Bardot regretted not releasing her version, and her friend Jean-Louis Remilleux persuaded her to contact Serge - they released it in 1986. The song has since been covered by many different artists, but obviously has never reached the original...

One of my favourite track vocals: a deep husky female singing voice... - Cass Fox was busking on London's tube, bumped into Rui da Silva, of Portuguese descent, who spotted her at Piccadilly Circus station. That's just like London life goes... - from zero to hero - or vice versa.

Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart & You're Making Me High

Toni Braxton was born 1967 in Severn, Maryland into a strict religious family with her dad being a Methodist clergyman. As with so many women of R&B, Toni has her first musical experiences in her church choir.
Together with her four sisters Traci, Trina, Towanda and Tamar, Toni began performing as The Braxtons. Their first single 'Good Life', released in 1990 through Arista Records, was not successful, but it attracted the attention of Antonio 'L.A.' Reid and Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds. This was Toni's chance: both had written 'Love Shoulda Brought You Home' for Anita Baker for the soundtrack of Eddie Murphy's film Boomerang, but because Anita was pregnant at the time and decided not to record it. Toni's recording was later included on the soundtrack along with 'Give U My Heart', a duet by Braxton & Babyface.

On July 13, 1993, LaFace Records, Babyface's subsidiary of Arista, released Braxton's self-titled debut album. 'Another Sad Love Song' and 'Breathe Again' were chart topping releases thereof.
In June 1996, Braxton released her second and most successful album, Secrets.

The album's second single, 'Un-Break My Heart', written by Diane Warren, became the biggest hit of her career, spending eleven weeks at #1 and also topping the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart. The song is the second biggest selling single by a female singer in US Billboard Chart history behind Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. Background vocals were performed by R&B singers Shanice Wilson and Chante Moore. The music video featured Braxton mourning the death of her lover, played by Ralph Lauren model Tyson Beckford (pictured right).

How I loved this track all the way back in 1993! And that, rather than for it's dancability, more for it's heavy, deep bass line. Try it out: turn up this track with a touch of extra base and you'll have a gut-tingling experience.
Tonya Kelly, Joi Marshall and Di Reed were Jade. Their first single was titled 'I Wanna Love You' and was deeply considered as the answer song to male R&B group Color Me Badd's 'I Wanna Sex You Up' (remember?) The track led the way for the trio's biggest known single 'Don't Walk Away' and their debut album went on to receive platinum status.
Due to 'irreconcilable differences' with their record company and mismanagement of funds, Jade disbanded after the release of their 1994 album 'Mind, Body, & Soul'.
Joi went on to release an independent solo gospel album in 2007, Testimony & Praise, and wrote a book entitled 'Answers to the 20 Most Asked Questions in the Music Business'. Tonya became an interior designer with her own successful firm. She gained a degree in Interior and Architectural Design prior to joining Jade. Di continues to work on solo music and has been singing backup for the likes of Rod Stewart and Usher.

In 1998, Brandy Rayana Norwood from McComb, Mississippi, and Monica Denise Brown (born Arnold) from Atlanta, Georgia, released an album that should contain a track with the same name: 'The Boy Is Mine'. Written by LaShawn Daniels, Fred Jerkins III, Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins and Brandy with co-production by Dallas Austin, the song's lyrics tell a story about two women disputing the love of a man and is commonly perceived as Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson's duet 'The Girl Is Mine', which was charting 16 years earlier, in 1982.

Alessandro Gilardi, Claudio Varola, Federico Di Bonaventura and Walter Cremonini were Jinny, an Italian Pop/House formation which released tracks throughout the 90s. The original singers were session singers, but Jinny had several female 'faces', who did not actually sing. British book of hit singles lists singer as Janine Brown. Feel the Rhythm was also released with a male Jinny. There were numerous different CD covers around the world with faces most suited to their particular market. The Italian 'Keep Warm' for instance featured a topless female whilst the UK release had no image of a person at all. Jinny also had a string of follow up hits in continental Europe but none could reach this track's UK#11 position in 1995.

8 Years ago. 8 years? Yes, 8 years ago! Time FLIES! Sandy Riviera, born in Manhattan's north, Harlem, is behind such infamous projects like Kings of Tomorrow. He has had several big hitters to date, but one I remember very much is this one: Dreams. It's Arabesque subnote is something you wouldn't normally expect of a Latino DJ & remixer. Other tracks preceeded and followed, both under his name and synonyms, such as 'Changes', which I shall recommend shortly.
Sandy lives in New Jersey these days. Personally, I don't understand the progress route of residencies, but then again, New Jersey - like Wales in the UK - is famous for it's vocalists. Pulse on the talent?

Turn it up loud, close your eyes, and imagine being in Chicago, walking on the stormy wave-whipping lake shore while the rain is battering down from above.
Ending up absolutely sogged from all sides, but happy, watching the city skyline with sea birds circling. Exactly this is what I experienced. Awesome! - The track uses parts of Clannad's 1982 hit Theme From Harry's Game with both re-recorded and newly-written lyrics, performed by Irish Celtic folk singer and Clannad singer Máire Brennan, sister of Enya.

Lale Andersen - Lili Marleen (1915 & 1939)

On 11 November, Armistice Day in most of Europe, remembering the end of a cruel and absolutely pointless war in Europe, I thought I draw your attention to this one:
Few internationally-known songs symbolise the two horrid World Wars in Europe of last the last century (1914-1918 and 1939-1945) more than the song Lili Marleen. - Here a little history of the song, together with the lyrics of it's original German version and many, many international adaptions.
The words were written in 1915 during World War I by Hans Leip (1893–1983), a school teacher from Hamburg who had been conscripted into the Imperial German Army. Hans Leip reportedly combined the names of his girlfriend and another female friend. The poem was published as 'Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht' ('The Song of a Young Soldier on Watch') in 1937, now with the two last (of five) verses added. It was set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938 and first recorded - contrary to popular belief by Lale Andersen - not Marlene Dietrich - in 1939.

After the occupation of Belgrade, Serbia, in 1941 Radio Belgrade became the German forces' radio station under the name of Soldatensender Belgrad (Soldiers' Radio Belgrade), with transmissions heard throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. While on leave in Vienna, a lieutenant working at the station was asked to collect some records for broadcast. Amongst the pile of second-hand records from the Reich radio station was the little known two-year-old song 'Lili Marleen' sung by Lale Andersen, which up til then had barely sold around 700 copies. For lack of other recordings, Radio Belgrade played the song frequently.
At one point the Nazi government's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, ordered broadcasting of the song to stop. Radio Belgrade received many letters from Axis (German & Italian) soldiers all over Europe asking them to play 'Lili Marleen' again. Goebbels reluctantly changed his mind, and from then on the tune was used to sign-off the broadcast at 9.55pm.
Its popularity quickly grew. Soldiers stationed around the Mediterranean, including both German Afrika Korps and British Eighth Army troops, regularly tuned in to hear it. Erwin Rommel, commander of the Afrika Korps, admired the song and asked Radio Belgrade to incorporate it into their broadcasts, which they did. Many Allied soldiers made a point of listening to it at the end of the day.
While the Italian version, translated by lyricist Nino Rastelli and recorded in 1942 by Lina Termini, was probably the first to be released, the earliest English language recording of the song was probably Anne Shelton's in 1944, but a number of cover versions followed. A version called 'The D-Day Dodgers' was sung by the Canadian Army remaining in Italy once the Normandy invasion had begun in 1944. A recording was made by Perry Como on 27 June 1944 and issued by RCA Victor Records.
